While Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country, where the majority of the population abstains from alcohol for religious reasons, it is still legal to purchase and consume alcohol in certain places. Here’s what you need to know about drinking in Morocco:
Where to Buy Alcohol
Alcohol can be purchased in licensed shops, supermarkets (such as Carrefour or Marjane), and specialized liquor stores in major cities. Some restaurants, bars, and hotels, particularly in tourist areas, also serve alcohol. However, it's less common in smaller towns or more conservative regions.
Where to Drink
It is important to be respectful of local customs when consuming alcohol. Drinking in public places, like on the streets or beaches, is considered disrespectful and can result in fines. Stick to licensed venues such as restaurants, bars, or private accommodations where alcohol is permitted.
During Religious Holidays
During Ramadan and other religious holidays, the sale of alcohol may be restricted, and many establishments stop serving alcohol out of respect for local customs. Tourists should be mindful of these periods when planning their stay.
Cultural Considerations
While alcohol is available in Morocco, it’s essential to be discreet and respectful of the local culture. Drinking responsibly is highly encouraged, especially in more conservative areas, where attitudes towards alcohol may be stricter.
By being aware of these guidelines, you can enjoy your stay in Morocco while respecting the country’s traditions and laws.
