Château de Pléhaut, a 700-Year-Old Château for 18 in the Gers

A retreat for eighteen people is a difficult size to place. Small hotels put you in a wing and keep the rest of the building running around you. Large estates price for forty and leave you paying for rooms nobody sleeps in.

Château de Pléhaut is built for exactly this number. Nine bedrooms, one group, one set of keys, and 5.5 hectares of private land around the building for the length of the stay.

The Gers, the quiet half of south-west France

The Gers is the département between Toulouse and the Atlantic, the old province of Gascony. It is farmland, vineyards and small market towns, and it has almost none of the summer traffic of Provence or the Dordogne. Vic-Fezensac sits in the middle of it. Within a short drive there are Armagnac vineyards, weekly markets, village boulangeries, brocantes and swimming lakes, which gives a free afternoon real options without moving the group far.

Access is the question organisers ask first. Toulouse-Blagnac is the main airport at roughly an hour and a half by road, Pau is a similar drive to the south-west, and Bordeaux is around two and a half hours to the north. Groups usually arrive by car or minibus from Toulouse, on open country roads rather than motorway queues.

Seven hundred years of history, restored for 2026

The building runs to 750 m² across seventeen rooms, restored and refurnished ahead of the 2026 season. That matters for a retreat: the salons, the dining room and the bedrooms are usable as they are, with heating throughout, an indoor fireplace for evening sessions and a kitchen open to guests rather than closed off behind a service door.

Bookings are for the property. No reception desk, no second booking running alongside yours, no shared car park. Your group sets the timetable, the volume and what happens at seven in the morning on the lawn. Outside there is a new swimming pool, a barbecue, a terrace for meals, a separate gîte, and woodland at the far end of the grounds where the yoga decking sits.

Nine bedrooms, six bathrooms, eighteen beds

The nine bedrooms are mostly king beds, which suits couples and pairs of friends. Bedroom 7 has two singles for guests who want their own bed, and Bedroom 1 has a couch in the room, useful as a one-to-one corner or a facilitator room. Six bathrooms serve the nine rooms, so the ratio holds at full occupancy.

At eighteen guests every bed is used. At twelve or fourteen the group spreads out and a room can be held back as an office, a treatment room or storage for props and materials.

Where the sessions actually happen

There are three distinct places to run a session, and between them they cover most retreat formats. The yoga decking is a raised wooden platform in the woodland part of the grounds, out of sight of the house, with yoga equipment on site. Indoors there is a meditation space and a meeting space, the room for workshops, business offsites and anything that needs everyone seated and facing the same way. Speakers and a TV cover playlists, slides and guided audio.

The rest of the programme spreads outside. The pool and its loungers, the terrace, the front lawn, the hammock and the folly in the garden give a five-day retreat the informal spaces it needs as much as the formal ones.

Self-catering, a private chef, or both

The kitchen is open to guests and has a dishwasher, so a group that wants to cook together can. For retreats that would rather not, a private chef can be hired for the stay. Most organisers here mix the two: chef for dinners and the big group meals, self-catering for breakfasts and free days.

Meals move between the dining room and the outdoor terrace depending on the weather, and the barbecue covers the informal evenings. Wine tasting can be arranged on site, an easy addition in Armagnac country and one of the few local experiences that does not involve putting the group back in the minibus.
